ABSTRACT

Objective:

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of surgical technique, chosen according to the size and localization of nasal septal perforation, on the success of therapy.

Methods:

Seven patients who underwent repair of septal perforation between 2010 and 2012 were included in this study. Two patients with septal perforation were operated on by the open technique approach, while the other five were operated on by the endonasal approach. Grafts taken from conchal or septal cartilage were used during the repair of septal perforation. For the repair of perforation, pedunculated flaps were rotated from both sides of the nasal mucosa. In the postoperative period, surgical success were evaluated by nasal endoscopy.

Results:

The operation was not successful for two patients with large septal perforation. Perforation was successfully repaired in five patients with small and medium septal perforations.

Conclusion:

The most important factors affecting the success of septal perforation repair are the ability and experience of the surgeon, the amount of tissue in the remaider of the septum, the size and the localization of septal perforation. For the success of the treatment, it is important to use the most suitable surgical technique according to the properties of the perforation. (JAREM 2013; 3: 28-30)
